Scope: Design and construction of installation for Verge Festival
Location: The University of Sydney, Australia
Colourful Cloud was an installation art project for the 2013 Verge Festival at The University of Sydney. Part interactive installation, part mechanised sculpture and part colourful ball pit, the installation aimed to re-imagine and re-construct the wonderment and joy of the childhood amusement.
A controllable cloud of colourful balls hangs above a traditional ball pit scaled up to a size suitable for all ages. These colourful elements are contained within a simple Layher-System scaffold, with the hanging element being supported directly from the frame and clear polycarbonate sheeting used to create an enclosure for the traditional ball pit. The polycarbonate creates visually private interior by partially obscuring the contents, whilst still allowing people to see activity and colour on the inside. In this way the design appeals to the individual’s curiosity and invites them to explore and interact.
